<image:title>JOSHUA BIRTH - JOSHUA’S BIRTH</image:title>
<image:caption>"My waters broke at 39 weeks. I was scared but at the same time extremely excited, happy and inspired. My husband and I hugged, then called to the hospital to say that my waters had broken and they invited us in for assessment. The waters were clear and they said to come back when the surges become regular with 3 minutes between. We came home, had lunch, and then at @4pm the surges started! I was trying to continue as normal: walk around, preparing baby things and watch favourite films... By 7pm the surges were @ 4 mins apart. I was doing the visualizations, but I wasn't able to concentrate, the surges were coming so strong. But here came the main result of our HypnoBirthing sessions - I welcomed the intensity of the surges. I focused on the fact that the stronger the surge was, the closer our baby was to meeting us! So I was moaning and making noises, but happy. We returned to hospital and it was hard to walk. When they assessed me I was dilated 2cm. They kept us in triage for @1hr and then to send us to antenatal ward. We were practicing deep breathing, we were walking up and down the corridors, and I was really noisy. But I knew every bit of it was bringing us closer to meeting our beautiful boy. At 9 o'clock there was no progress, so we were sent to antenatal ward. I was the loudest person there! I was moaning - low sounds like we spoke about. During every surge I was kneeling or squatting. It was another very important lesson of yours - to squat as it helps shorten the birth canal. So we spent @ 1.5 hrs strolling around. J was amazing - calm and supportive (though he said he felt useless!). He helped me breath and he massaged my back. I was so concentrated on myself and deep in my body. By 11 o'clock I felt I couldn't do it anymore (I remembered it was a good sign as this might be transition -soon fully dilated). I had another surge with a huge urge to push... They assessed me and said there was no surprise I felt pushy! I was absolutely ready! They transferred me to the labour ward and I began to bear down. During the surges I was on all fours. They said to push, but J said that we are “breathing” the baby out. Thankfully we had a very good team of doctors/midwives. They were open minded and on our side. Then suddenly - I felt our boy was on his way! He appeared between my legs on the bed and I was the first to catch him!! He was a miracle!!! They wanted to cut the cord, but J asked them to wait til it stopped pulsating, and they were happy to! J cut it and then took off his t-shirt and put the baby on his chest for skin to skin contact and the doctors left us to enjoy our beautiful baby. They really were very supportive, saying that it was a wonderful natural birth, and I seemed in control. It was very hard but I felt my power. It was extremely natural and it felt so right! You really gave us priceless lessons. I kept them in mind all the way through, even if I couldn't follow them precisely. I'm really really really happy and proud we had beautiful, natural birth and don't have words enough to say thank you, Stina - I'm extremely grateful for the preparation" - M & J, London</image:caption>

<image:caption>Stina taught me to accept and move forward from my first birthing experience and embrace the fact that my body would know how to birth my baby. So I did, drug and pain free at home. Sophia arrived 11 days after her due date at home in water. Thanks to her guidance we felt confident enough to avoid induction any unnecessary medical intervention. I was relaxed enough to have reached 5cm without really realising that I was in the early stages of labour! When my waters broke and my surges felt stronger I called Stina and the midwives to come. I had used the Epi-no in the weeks before birth whilst listening to the Hypnobirthing visualisations and so when she was crowning I didn't feel pain, just pressure. It was magical when Sophia arrived healthy and calm in the birthing pool." - DP, London</image:caption>

      <image:title>THEO'S BIRTH TIME LINE - Theo’s birth</image:title>
<image:caption>I first noticed surges at 4pm shortly after my 40 week midwife appointment. I had experienced some Braxton Hicks the few days prior and didn't think this was any different so carried on with my day as normal, taking my son to the library and preparing dinner as I usually would. At about 6pm my husband noticed that the surges were only 3 minutes apart and that was when I realised I must be in early labour. In between surges I read my son bedtime stories knowing that this may well be the last time we would be a family of 3. From 6:30pm to 10pm I felt a softness to the labour that I hadn't experienced with my first birth. Stina had showed me a video of a Hawaiian birth from the documentary 'Birth As We Know It' and I had really resonated with how Amber had experienced birthing. During this time I felt extremely connected to my baby and to the power of nature. With every surge I actively surrendered and softened, allowing myself to become a part of the energy rather than its victim. It felt indescribably expansive. I listened to Native American ceremonial music and focused on a picture on the wall (I would recommend making something that guides and supports your journey). During this time I internalised the motion of the spiral as mentioned in the Birth As You Know It documentary. When standing or sitting I kept moving my hips in a figure of eight. When things started to get more intense I would take a shower to let my muscles relax. Stina also did some light touch massage and suggested that I focus on these sensations between surges. Finding the right noise to exhale through the surges (low and deep) helped me to move through the pain while not expending too much energy. By 1am I was almost fully dilated and just after the examination my waters broke. At this point Stina and the midwives led me to the birthing pool and when I got into its warm waters it really felt like a tiny moment of bliss. Bliss was dashed very shortly by strong urges to push and this was when I found my voice. Baby was coming and quickly. I knew that it wouldn't be long so I made the most of the moments between the contractions to gather my strength. A few more pushes and baby Theo was in my arms….”</image:caption>

<image:caption>My contractions started at night and I was on the phone with Stina from the early hours. The home birth experience was amazing, the midwives were really lovely and everybody was getting on as a team. I was able to labour for 19 hours without pain relief and felt so glad to have practiced Hypnobirthing during pregnancy. I felt totally in control and empowered and moving through the surges using with my breath. I was in the pool, playing Hypnobirthing affirmations and was amazed at how much they helped. Throughout the birth, Stina suggested ways to help the birth progress. She kept me hydrated and well fed and avoided an early transfer to the hospital due to Ketosis (not eating enough so the body breaks down its own stores). However, when I was about 6cm dilated my labour stalled and there was talk of being transferred to the hospital. Stina helped with her “Spinning Babies” technique which may have been why baby moved into an optimal position and descend. We transferred to the hospital to check the position of the baby and enroute my waters broke and amazingly, on arrival I was 8 cm dilated! I was taken to the ward - and then it got crazy. The room filled with people and I totally zoned out. The hospital staff strongly recommended I have the induction drip, saying my contractions were not strong and regular enough - but my contractions were really strong and regular. They said the baby was distressed because there was meconium in the waters but Stina said "won't giving her the induction drip make the surges stronger and stress baby out more?" This could well have lead to an instrumental birth or C-Section...The vibe was tense and the doctor then suggested I have an epidural because I was exhausted and needed help to push baby out. Again Stina stepped in and said, "but how can it help her push if having the epidural means she can't feel her legs?" Having built up a relationship prior to the birth, Stina knew me - but the hospital staff didn't. To them I was a load of statistics. Stina knew I had a history of competitive sports and I remember her saying to me quietly that she could see I was tired yes, but not exhausted...and that I had all the strength I needed to birth my baby. These words gave me encouragement - but the discussion in general was also buying me time! I had been feeling the urge to push for a while and in doing so, I was bringing the baby down. Suddenly the baby's head started to show and the staff looked so suprised and the doctor walked out..then only a few minutes later I birthed Gael - without any intervention. It is clear to my husband and I that we may not have had the birth we wanted without Stina. Without blame, the hospital staff had not seen the bigger picture, they had not seen how well the birth had progressed during transfer and that all I needed was time. The suggested interventions turned out to be unnecessary and may have interfered with the natural birth we so wanted.”</image:caption>
